Porous surfaces hold these oils and cause a discoloration.

  1. Blot the spilled coffee with a paper towel. Try and remove any access liquid, but do not scrub. 
  2. For black coffee stains, take some mild liquid detergent and place directly onto a damp sponge.
  3. Gently rub the stain with the sponge in a circular motion. Coffee stains should gradually disappear.
  4. If the stain still appears, coffee stain removal also works with vinegar. Try applying a mixture of vinegar and lukewarm water directly onto the stain, using a sponge to get coffee stains out of furniture.

Until you spill your coffee. Yikes!

How to Get Coffee Stains Out of Carpet

The first thing you want to do when you discover the coffee stain is act fast. The worst thing you can do when removing coffee stains from carpet is wait!  

  1. Grab some paper towel and begin to gently blot the stain. If you scrub the coffee stain, this may cause the oils to be absorbed faster, so avoid doing that (despite your inclination to furiously rub the stain, this is not the best approach to removing coffee stains from carpet).
  2. If you don’t have paper towels handy, you can also use a dish towel. The key is to gently try and absorb as much of the color-carrying liquid as possible, before the coffee stain sets in.
  3. Flush the area of the carpet with no more than 1 cup of cool water. With another clean dish towel or paper towel, continue blotting the area, after applying cold water to the stain. 
  4. Next, mix two cups of lukewarm water with ¼ cup of lemon juice. Add a bit of liquid dishwashing detergent to the mix as well. When you’re wondering how to get coffee stains out of carpet, there’s nothing a little lemon juice can’t do (in a pinch, you can also use one-third cup white distilled vinegar to two-thirds cup water). 
  5. Apply the solution to a clean sponge. Don’t soak the sponge, but get it damp enough to have an effect when applied to the stain. 
  6. Begin at the outside of the coffee stain and gently rub in a circular motion, working your way to the inside of the stain. 
  7. Rinse the area with clean, cold water.  
  8. Using a clean, dry towel, remove any excess moisture by stepping directly onto the towel and firmly pressing. If the coffee stain still remains, repeat the process listed above until the stain is no longer visible.

To remove coffee stains from a rug, follow these steps:

  1. Gently blot the coffee stain with a paper towel as soon as you discover it.
  2. Dilute the coffee stain with a bit of water, and continue to blot with a paper towel.
  3. If the coffee stain is still visible, use a small amount of white vinegar to further dilute the stain (one tbsp. per cup of water).
  4. Do not use stain removers on area rugs, as this may leave a permanent mark.
